Understanding the Three Firewise Zones Around Your Home

Wildfire season is a reality for many property owners throughout Washington and Oregon. One of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of wildfire damage is by creating defensible space around your home using the three zones outlined by the Firewise® program.

Each zone has a different purpose, and together they help slow the spread of fire while giving firefighters a safer area to defend your property.

Zone 1: The Immediate Zone (0–5 Feet)

Aerial view of a house centered inside a red circle, surrounded by green lawn, shrubs, gravel, and a quiet rural yard.

This is the most critical area around your home.

The goal is to eliminate anything that could allow flames to reach your house. Even small combustible materials close to a structure can become ignition points during a wildfire.

In this zone, consider:

  • Removing dead leaves, pine needles, and other debris.

  • Keeping grass short and well maintained.

  • Removing combustible vegetation next to the home.

  • Keeping firewood, mulch, and other flammable materials away from structures.

  • Cleaning roofs and gutters regularly.

Zone 2: The Intermediate Zone (5–30 Feet)

The objective of Zone 2 is to reduce the intensity of an approaching fire before it reaches your home.

Good maintenance in this area includes:

  • Removing dead shrubs and small trees.

  • Pruning lower tree branches.

  • Spacing vegetation to reduce continuous fuels.

  • Mowing tall grass and weeds.

  • Removing invasive brush and overgrown vegetation.

This zone is where many rural properties begin to accumulate ladder fuels that allow fire to climb from the ground into tree canopies.

Zone 3: The Extended Zone (30–100 Feet)

Aerial view of a house in a forest clearing, ringed by a bright green circle overlay and dirt road, quiet rural setting.

The outer zone focuses on slowing the spread of wildfire before it reaches the inner defensible space.

Depending on your property, this may include:

  • Thinning dense stands of trees.

  • Removing dead or downed trees.

  • Reducing heavy brush and blackberry patches.

  • Creating breaks between groups of vegetation.

  • Improving access for emergency vehicles and equipment.

The goal isn't to clear every tree, it's to reduce fuel continuity while maintaining a healthy landscape.
