Wildfire Mitigation
Rugged Land can help protect your property from wildfires by using methods recommended by the NFPA. These methods include clearing and maintaining defensible space, choosing fire-resistant materials and maintaining emergency access routes.

The NFPA recommends maintaining three zones of wildfire defense. Here's how Rugged Land can help...

1
The Immediate Zone (0-5 feet)
The immediate zone is the area closest to your home and the most critical for wildfire defense. This zone should be kept lean, clean and green to prevent embers and flames from igniting your structure.

-
Remove dead vegetation, dry leaves and pine needles from around the home, decks and gutters.
-
Clear brush, flammable plants and wood piles away from the foundation.
-
Trim back overhanging tree limbs and branches that are within 10 feet of the roof or chimney.
-
Use non-combustible gravel or stone mulch around the base of the home instead of bark or wood chips.
-
Maintain a clear and clutter free space beneath decks, porches and stairways to reduce fuel sources.
2
The Intermediate Zone (5-30 feet)
The intermediate zone serves as a buffer between your home and the surrounding vegetation, helping slow or stop the spread of fire.

-
Thin out brush and vegetation to reduce fuel buildup and slow fire spread.
-
Create spacing between trees and large shrubs to prevent fire from climbing or spreading.
-
Remove ladder fuels by clearing low branches and trimming undergrowth beneath trees.
-
Maintain green, well-watered grass or install low flammability ground covers.
-
Relocate trailers, boats and other combustibles away from structures.
3
The Extended Zone (30-100 feet)
The extended zone is the outermost defensible space area, focused on slowing fire spread and reducing fuel continuity.

-
Reduce tree density by thinning overcrowded areas to slow wildfire spread.
-
Remove dead trees, fallen branches and heavy accumulation of dried vegetation.
-
Maintain access roads, driveways and trails to ensure emergency vehicle access.
-
Create fuel breaks by clearing wide paths or open space around the property.
-
Manage natural vegetation to promote healthy growth and reduce fire intensity.
