If your property has become covered in tall grass, weeds, brush, vines, or small trees, you may be wondering where to even start.
The best way to clear an overgrown property depends on the type and density of vegetation, the terrain, and what you want the property to look like when the work is finished.
Start by Assessing the Property
Before clearing begins, it’s important to identify potential obstacles and hazards. Rocks, fencing, irrigation equipment, stumps, debris, steep slopes, and uneven ground can all affect what equipment can safely be used.
You should also decide what you want to accomplish. Are you trying to reclaim a pasture, reduce wildfire fuels, open up access, clean up a vacant lot, or simply make the property easier to maintain?
Use the Right Equipment
For large areas of tall grass, weeds, and brush, mechanical mowing is often one of the fastest and most cost-effective options. A skid steer equipped with a heavy-duty brush cutter can mow vegetation that would be difficult and time-consuming to remove with a standard mower.
Dense brush, vines, saplings, and unwanted vegetation may require a combination of equipment. Grapples can be used to pull, pile, and move material, while chainsaws, string trimmers, and other hand tools can handle areas that machinery can't safely reach.
If the material needs to be removed, woody debris can often be chipped to dramatically reduce its volume. Other vegetation and debris can be loaded into a trailer and hauled away.
Think Beyond the Initial Cleanup
Clearing an overgrown property is often just the first step. Roots and seeds may remain after the initial clearing, allowing weeds and brush to return.
Regular mowing or periodic maintenance can help prevent the property from becoming overgrown again. In many cases, maintaining a cleared property is significantly easier and less expensive than reclaiming it after several years of unchecked growth.
