If you have an acre of property that has become overgrown with tall grass, weeds, brush, blackberries or small trees, you may be wondering: how much does it cost to clear an acre of overgrown land?

The answer depends heavily on what is growing there, the terrain and what you want the finished property to look like.

Typical Land Clearing Costs

For basic mowing and brush clearing, an acre of relatively accessible land may cost several hundred to around $1,500 or more per acre. Heavily overgrown properties that require tree removal, debris hauling, wood chipping or extensive hand work can cost considerably more.

Some of the biggest factors affecting land clearing cost include:

  • Vegetation density: Tall grass and weeds are generally easier to clear than thick brush, blackberries and small trees.

  • Terrain: Steep, rocky or uneven ground can make clearing slower and more difficult.

  • Equipment access: Properties that can be easily accessed with a skid steer or other equipment are generally more efficient to clear.

  • Debris removal: Hauling vegetation away adds labor, transportation and disposal costs.

  • Desired results: Simply mowing vegetation down costs less than completely removing brush, trees and roots.

Every Acre Is Different

Two one-acre properties can require completely different amounts of work. An open field covered in five-foot-tall grass might be cleared relatively quickly, while an acre filled with dense brush, blackberries and saplings could require substantially more time and equipment.

That's why seeing the property is one of the best ways to determine what type of work will be required.
