At Rugged Land, we often get called to help property owners dealing with vegetation that has spiraled out of control. Recently, we tackled a project on the outskirts of Walla Walla, Washington. A ½-acre pasture behind a home had become severely overgrown with tall, dry grass.

Sunset over rural landscape with dry grass, a wooden fence, and barns. The sky is orange with scattered clouds, creating a tranquil mood.

This pasture once housed goats. However, after the animals left, the grass and weeds quickly took over. The landowners were worried about fire danger, especially since one side of the pasture bordered a busy road. They could no longer mow it themselves due to how thick and tall the grass had become. That’s when they reached out to Rugged Land for assistance.

Step One: Walkthrough and Estimate

After hearing the customer’s concerns, we scheduled a walkthrough of the property to assess the job. We checked access points, terrain conditions, and vegetation density before providing an accurate estimate. Once everything was approved, we set a date and time to complete the job.

Step Two: Early Morning Start

We arrived early on a Saturday morning to beat the August heat and keep dust levels manageable. For maximum efficiency, we used a two-person crew:

  • One operator ran our skid steer with a 72” brush cutter attachment.

  • The second person worked on foot with a weed trimmer, cutting vegetation along fence lines and in tight areas the brush cutter couldn’t reach.

This setup also provided an important safety measure. The spotter identified and removed hidden hazards such as wire, sprinklers, and fence panels before they became a risk to equipment.

Step Three: Clearing the Pasture

Because conditions were so dry, the job created a lot of dust. However, within just two hours, the overgrown pasture was cleared. Our brush cutter is designed for heavy vegetation, not finish mowing, so the process left behind a layer of mulch. We explained this to the customers in advance, and they were happy to follow up with their own mower to give the pasture a smooth finish.

The Results: Fire Risk Reduced, Usable Land Restored

By the time we finished, the pasture was completely reclaimed. The landowners were thrilled that they could now maintain the space themselves using their own equipment. More importantly, the fire hazard was greatly reduced, giving them peace of mind heading into wildfire season.
